Conditions of Admission to Italian Universities - How to Enroll

1. Start with a Foundation Program

Start your Italian journey by enrolling in a Foundation program. You will need this if you are planning to do your undergraduate studies there as the Italian higher education system is based on 3-year first-cycle bachelor degree programs. The foundation program can be taught in Italian or in English and are of one year long and prepares international students for the entrance exam as well as the undergraduate curriculum.

2. Clear the Entrance Exams to get Admission in University

During the foundation program, the student will have to contact the university where they are planning to do their academic degree to ask about the entrance exam and submit an enrollment application. Different entrance exams are required for different programs

Applications deadline of each university are typically in the summer but may vary. It is advised to check the university's website and apply as early as possible.

How to get a Student Visa

For a Non-EU student, a student visa is required. Visas are issued by the Italian Embassy in the home country of the student.

  • If you are attending a short course which is less than 90 days, then a Short-stay Visa (Type C) is sufficient.
  • If you are enrolled in a degree course that is at least 20 hours/week or 80 hours/month, then you will need a Long stay (national) visa – type D, for study purposes.
